Port Kembla has been in operation for the past 120 years, historically servicing the needs of regional industries, predominantly coal and steel.
In recent years, with manufacturing in decline, Port Kembla has transformed itself into the largest vehicle importing hub in Australia.
But with the Australian automotive industry in the process of shutting down following a series of poor decisions by the Abbott/Turnbull Governments, imports are on the rise.
According the the WIN News report, the volume of motor vehicles through the port has more than doubled from 1.8 million tonnes to 4.6 million tonnes since 2008.
“A lot of the cars here are imported, which is a bit of a shame,” Cross tells WIN News.
“We’d like to see a vibrant car industry and a vibrant manufacturing industry more broadly."
