Position Vacant - Legal Director

The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) is seeking a senior legal strategist to lead the Legal Unit and manage the legal strategy in line with the Union’s policy framework and challenging environment.

  • Location: Sydney CBD (some travel required)

Located in the MUA's National Office in Sydney, the position reports to the Deputy National Secretary in consultation with the National Secretary.

Suitably qualified candidates will possess a breadth of experience in providing high level strategic legal advice with a strong emphasis on industrial and employment law;  a sound understanding and strong working knowledge of the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) and associated legislation, as well as the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009 (Cth) is essential, together with a well-developed knowledge of the Maritime Industry.  An understanding of general commercial law and law of defamation, and Workplace Health and Safety legislation and regulations are additional requirements of the role.

You will need the capacity to direct a busy national litigation caseload, to supervise the work of legal and compliance staff, to manage legislative governance compliance requirements and to ensure the delivery of the Union’s in-house and external legal services.  You will be a professional advocate with well-developed staff management skills and the ability to multi-task.

To be considered for this role, applicants must possess a degree in Law, together with an Unrestricted Practicing Certificate or eligibility to obtain such qualification, and have no less than 10 years' post admission or equivalent experience in similar roles.
