Port Corporation and P & O have made a joint commitment to lift safety standards following a nationwide stevedore strike. Around 50 waterside workers in the Kooragang Island P & O Automotive and General Stevedoring site returned to work yesterday after participating in a 24 hour strike.
They protested against safety conditions after one of their colleagues died in Melbourne.
According to Jim Boyle, Newcastle Secretary, Maritime Union of Australia, all stakeholders met yesterday to discuss improving safety strategies.

It was quiet at Melbourne's Appleton Dock this morning.
Stevedore Stephen Piper was crushed to death when a 2.5-tonne steel beam fell from a crane at Melbourne's Appleton Dock early yesterday morning.
Maritime Union of Australia national secretary Paddy Crumlin says Mr Piper's death has prompted a new union fight on safety.
"This is not an industry with hundreds of thousands of workers, these are small groups of workers placed under tremendous pressure and they're dying at a rate that we haven't seen for generations," he said....
The Maritime Union's assistant national secretary, Warren Smith, says a meeting with the company last night ended with a heated exchange.
"We were left in a cold smoko two hours before they bothered to come and see us and when they came out they told us that they didn't have to show us any of the company's safe operating procedures or processes or job safety analysis and the company walked out," he said.
Mr Smith claims the recent deaths on the waterfront reflect a slipping standard of safety at all Australian ports.
"It's an abnormal spike that's reflective of what is the decreased levels of workers on the job and the consistently increased levels of productivity," he said.
The Maritime Union wants the Federal Government to draft new national safety laws for Australian wharves.
And national secretary Paddy Crumlin says further industrial action is on the cards.
"If they don't address it and the stevedores don't accept their responsibility in that process there's going to be a lot more of that stuff," he said.
A spokesman for Workplace Relations Minister Simon Crean says maritime and stevedoring safety will be an element of the new national occupational health and safety laws to take effect in 2012.
Worksafe Victoria is investigating yesterday's accident at Appleton Dock.

A 41-year-old father-of-two, from Dingley Village in Melbourne's south-east, was killed when a 2.7-tonne steel beam fell from a crane and landed on him.
WorkSafe Victoria said the worker was rigging a drum to a lifting device with the steel beam when the hydraulic brakes failed to operate together and caused the beam to fall.

Wharfies have shut down the operations of a major stevedoring company for 24 hours after a worker was crushed to death at a dock in Melbourne.
The father of two from Dingley Village was rigging a steel drum to a lifting device with the steel beam. Worksafe Victoria inspectors believe the hydraulic jacks failed to operate in unison, causing the beam to fall on the worker.
"The industry is in crisis," MUA national secretary Paddy Crumlin said in a statement.

"We need to start getting some commitments off people that they're going to fix this," he said.
"That we're going to have a single safety standard in this country, we're going to have a single point of enforcement. That there is going to be training, that there's not going to be casualisation and short cuts on labour at the expense of people's lives.
"I mean they're not hard things to commit to."

Crumlin says POAGS has the worst record in an industry with an appalling record.
