Tragic death of two workers at Stena Clyde Oil Rig

The Maritime Union of Australia extends its deepest sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of the two workers tragically killed working on the Stena Clyde rig in the Otway Basin off the Victorian coastline.

TRAGIC DEATH OF TWO WORKERS AT STENA CLYDE OIL RIG

The Maritime Union of Australia extends its deepest sympathies to the families, friends and colleagues of the two workers tragically killed working on the Stena Clyde rig in the Otway Basin off the Victorian coastline.

Police have confirmed that a 32-year-old from the Northern Territory and a 60-year-old from Scotland are deceased and the offshore drilling rig has been evacuated. It has been reported that the men died in an incident involving heavy machinery, although there has been no confirmation of the cause of death. It is understood that one of the deceased workers was an employee of Origin Energy and the second man was employed by Stena Drilling.

“The thoughts of all MUA members were with the families and colleagues of these two men and we convey our deepest condolences,” MUA Deputy National Secretary, Mick Doleman said.

“It is appropriate that all workers on the vessel are returned onshore and offered counselling and other support needed.”

The police and the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) are investigating the deaths.

"Working in the offshore often involves dangerous tasks and sadly, this tragic incident reminds us of those risks and the need for constant vigilance when it comes to health and safety on the job,” Mr Doleman said.

“It is important that the cause of the deaths is ascertained to ensure this tragedy is not repeated.”
