The Maritime Union of Australia’s Newcastle youth committee has donated $2500 to the John Hunter Children’s Hospital this Christmas.
This adds to the $5000 they donated earlier this year.
Youth Committee Secretary Steven Murray told the Newcastle Herald that one of the meanings of Christmas is the spirit of giving.
“We believe that the children at John Hunter who are doing it tough should have a good Christmas like other children. We are doing this donation for that reason,” Murray said.
“Every MUA member in Australia puts $50 a month into a rolling fund, on top of their union dues, which is donated to different charities every month throughout the year.
“We all believe in putting back into the community, as well as supporting every worker for safer and better conditions in their workplace.
“I do think more businesses and organisations should do more around Christmas and through the year to support less fortunate people.”
A Facebook post by the committee said it was important to help kids that will have to spend Christmas in the John Hunter Hospital.
