Yet another waterside worker narrowly avoids death

In another horrific waterfront accident MUA member Kane Barnett was nearly crushed to death yesterday while unloading cargo on the POAGs TT Line operation in Melbourne.

"Kane was nearly killed and his life will be affected forever due to his unjuries sustained on Friday," said MUA Assistant National Secretary Warren Smith. "He suffered massive internal injuries, broken ribs, damaged liver and broken veterbrae as well as having to have his spleen removed. "

This accident is further evidence of the inadequate safety standards in place on waterfront operations around Australia.

"The MUA is determined to ensure no more workers become vicitms of the workplace while simply in the pursuit of a livelihood for their families. A regulated National Stevedoring Code of Practice must be put in place now," he said
