"The gender pay gap should not be tolerated, it is 2010 and if women are still earning less than men it is a national disgrace," - MUA National Women's Liaison Officer Mich-Elle Myers.
The Maritime Union joined the ACTU and comrade unions today in calling on the Gillard Government to honour its commitment to equal pay.
Outcry came after the Federal Government today warned it would have to fund any pay increases awarded in the SACS equal pay case by cutting other programs.
It urged Fair Work Australia to "find the right balance" between equal remuneration for community sector workers and "the broader implications of any wage increase".

But unions say it is unacceptable that full-time working women earn 18 per cent less than men or almost $1 million less over a lifetime and are two and a half times more likely to live in poverty in their old age. |
"The gender pay gap should not be tolerated, it is 2010 and if women are still earning less than men it is a national disgrace," said MUA National Women's Liaison Officer Mich-Elle Myers. "Of course it was going to cost money.. but at some point you have to overlook the cost and do what is right."
