Motion of Support - Reproductive Health Reform Bill 2019

The Sydney, Newcastle and Southern NSW Branches and the National Women’s committee of the Maritime Union of Australia division of the Construction Forestry Maritime Mining and Energy Union urge the NSW Legislative Council to support and pass the Reproductive Health Reform Bill 2019, without amendment, in the coming weeks.

The Sydney, Newcastle and Southern NSW Branches and the National Women’s committee of the Maritime Union of Australia division of the Construction Forestry Maritime Mining and Energy Union recognises that the decriminalisation of reproductive health is a long overdue in NSW and without reproductive justice women cannot have economic justice.

We acknowledge the women (and men) who have been actively campaigning about this issue for decades. Many of the activists involved in the campaign to decimalise abortion over decades and today are unionists.

Reproductive health and rights are a health issue and not a criminal one. Reproductive health services should be accessible, safe and legal.

It’s past time that reproductive rights were not criminalised in NSW. Now is the time for change and we urge the NSW Legislative Council to pass the Bill.

This resolution was passed unanimously by the above branches and committee.
