After a fire ripped through the living quarters of a Hong Kong flagged ship in the early hours of the morning 16 crew were rushed to hospital.
Crew from a container vessel docked at DP World were rushed to hospital this morning after a fire ripped through the accommodation quarters of the ship APL Columbia.
"At this stage we understand that 16 of the crew of 17 Chinese and 6 Indian workers have been taken to several hospitals suffering from smoke inhalation problems and some burns", said the International Transport Federation, National Co-ordinator, Dean Summers.
APL Columbia was moored at DP World at Port Botany. The ship is chartered by the global APL, operated by the Hong Kong-based Univan Ship Management and also registered and owned in Hong Kong by the Miltons Way group.
"We have little information at this stage about how the fire started but are concerned that all necessary medical attention is provided to the crew", said Mr Summers.
The fire at around 1.30am saw terminal road operations at Port Botany cease.
