More than 200 delegates from 18 countries took part in a regional Asia-Pacific meeting in solidarity with Cuba that was held in Sri Lanka’s capital of Colombo October 20-21.
Delegates discussed building opposition to Washington’s decades-long economic embargo against Cuba and its revolutionary government, and support for the international campaign to free the Cuban Five, revolutionaries jailed by the U.S. government since 1998 and framed up on conspiracy charges.
The speaker at this week’s forum participated in the conference and also took the opportunity to learn more about aspects of the class struggle in Sri Lanka. A 26-year-long internal war ended there three years ago when the government finally defeated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (Tamil Tigers). Up to 100,000 people were killed in the course of the conflict, almost half civilians, mainly Tamil. More than half a million out of a population of twenty million were displaced.
