The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) today expressed its condolences following the death of a worker who was fatally injured on board the Floating Offshore Transfer Barge (FOTB) Spencer Gulf at Whyalla, in the Upper Spencer Gulf of South Australia.
Early reports indicate that the worker was cleaning the boom in a maintenance period on the FOTB. The operation of the boom has resulted in a fatal accident.
MUA Assistant National Secretary Warren Smith said there have been safety concerns surrounding the operation of the FOTB operation for some time.
“The MUA expresses condolences and sympathy to the worker’s family – any workplace death is one too many,” Mr Smith said.
“The MUA will continue to work to ensure the worker’s family is looked after by the company and that counselors are provided to the workforce.
“The South Australian Branch and National Office of the MUA are in contact with the workforce and the company to work through any issues.
“We await the outcome of the current investigation by SafeWork SA but as soon as it is complete, we’ll be seeking urgent meetings with CSL and Inco to discuss serious ongoing safety concerns on the FOTB operation.”
MUA South Australia Branch Secretary Jamie Newlyn said he had been trying for years to secure an agreement on this facility, which has a chequered history when it comes to safety.
“This is not the first serious breach of safety on the FOTB and there have been numerous instances of intervention from regulators,” Mr Newlyn said.
“Our members onboard have been continuously raising safety issues and advising SafeWork SA of problems.”
