The Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) is angered and disappointed by developments in Alma, Quebec where some 780 workers have been locked out of their workplace by global mining giant Rio Tinto.
The United Steelworkers Union (USW) reports that the company has locked out unionised workers in a bid to bring in cheaper casual labour.
The USW said this is not a fight for more money but for job security and secure employment for future generations.
The USW are now pursuing several legal options and have received solid support from local media and the Canadian Auto Workers' Union, who understand that fight is not only about saving jobs but also the future and wellbeing of the community.
MUA Deputy National Secretary Mick Doleman expressed solidarity with the MUA's Canadian comrades.
"The MUA has been in contact with our Canadian comrades and we're keeping a close eye on developments," Mr Doleman said.
"I'll be continuing to liaise with other Australian unions to discuss what our next steps could be.
"It is time for us to show solidarity and help our brothers and sisters in their time of need."
