Women@Work: Your StoriesMich-Elle Myers: Strong and ActiveMich-Elle Myers has been a stevedore and MUA member for seven years. She says she active in the MUA because “Unions are a powerhouse of action. They are constantly working on behalf of their member to make life better and the world a better place.”
At age 33, Mich-Elle has been a Bank Manager and a Bus Driver. She really admires "any Woman that has a go, stands up for what she believes in and demands fairness and equality. All the Women in the Maritime Industries." At Patricks/Toll Port Botany she is one of seven women stevedores and is looking forward to having more women in her workplace. She also thinks it's important to fight for "A fair deal for all and a safe place to work" and "No WorkChoices legislation." Mich-Elle has been involved in the ITF Congress, Durban South Africa 2006; ILWU Lockout 2003; and the Waterfront Dispute, Nelson New Zealand 2001. She said these events forge the "friendships involved in global solidarity." For her "supporting brothers and sisters around the world is truly what makes it all real. It makes us who we are. It is what OUR union is about. Picket lines are the place to be. It's hard to understand what a person is going through until you stand shoulder to shoulder outside the gate." Mich-Elle is waiting eagerly for "female officials voted in and respected by all the members" of the MUA. She is motivated by Martin Luther King's quote "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter." |
