WIMDOI 2005- Strong Unions Need Women

Women in Male Dominated Occupations and Industries - WIMDOI - Conference began yesterday, August 23rd 2005, at the MUA branch in Fremantle.

Max Adlam, (CFMEU Forestry division) and Karen Leavy (MUA) will be co-convening the event with this year being the highest particiation of MUA women at a WIMDOI conference. The MUA Women's committee has funded the $400 registration costs for the women to participate in Conference, and some Branches are funding the travel costs. The women's delegation being -

the WIMDOI dinner is on the Wednesday night for all 32 WIMDOI Conference
Delegates, with invited speaker, Helen Creed, President LHMWU, and special guest, Carol Martin, MLA Member for Kimberley (ALP), who opened the conference along with Yvonne Henderson (EOC).
The conference has attracted participants from the RMTU New Zealand, the AMIEU (meatworkers) NSW and Qld, AMWU, NSW, Vic, Qld, SA and WA; UFU (firefighters) CFMEU SA, WA, and NSW; Police Association NSW and the PSU (dept of corrections NZ). ranging from high-ranking officials to rank and file members the cross section of industries has ensured a high level of input across the floor.

The purpose of this conference is to build the capacity of women to organise with all workers to win in the workplace. The conference is an opportunity for activists from a range of unions including the host union MUA to learn from each other and build solidarity. The skills and strategies learnt at this conference will be essential and useful in the new industrial framework post 1 July 2005.

This Conference is endorsed by the ACTU. Check branch newspapers and MWJ for the women's reports in September.
