Patrick robot runs amuck15 October 2003It appears Patrick's robot straddles have a mind of their own - something management were trying to do away with. On Monday, October 13 automated straddle 9 went haywire at Patrick's Fisherman Islands Berth 7. The giant robot hurtled 10 feet past the electronic barrier and crashed through a metal panel fence into the reefer area at 1.30pm, according to Brisbane branch officials. So much for management claims that the robots are more reliable than the workforce. "It will be interesting to see if Patrick had tested the robot's THC levels to check if it had been smoking pot three weeks previous to the accident, or what its blood alcohol level was," said assistant branch secretary Dave Perry. "Or maybe the insurance companies have other things to worry about." Fortunately no members were working in the neighbouring reefer area at the time and while damage was done to the straddle and the fence, no one was hurt. The incident, not the first from all accounts, comes on the eve of Patrick's international media event to showcase the straddles set for October 27-29.
