P&O EBA talks in full swing

National negotiations for the P&O enterprise agreement are now under way, with port committees and officials meeting with management in Brisbane, Sydney, Port Kembla, Melbourne, Geelong, Portland, Adelaide, Hobart, Fremantle, Bunbury, Port Hedland and Darwin over the next month.

The talks follow on from the National Conference of Delegates held in Sydney in March where conference delegates elected rank and file representatives to the national negotiating teams and discussed the many hundred resolutions coming from the workplaces nationwide. A log of claims was then put to P&O.

The national negotiating team lead by National Secretary Paddy Crumlin has since met with P&O senior management to discuss national issues in the EBA. Now senior management and regional managers are putting forward their claims on common operations issues in reach region.

Deputy National Secretary Jim Tannock and Assistant National Secretary Rick Newlyn are assisting the port committees and branch officers during the first round of talks. It is agreed that negotiations will continue into July even though the current EBA expires on June 30.

According to the National Office report the big challenges are changes proposed by management which are contrary to the policies developed at conference.

"The response from delegates representing P&O is one of determination and resolve," national officers report. "The union aims to achieve a positive and fair outcome that reflects the needs and future security of permanent employees and career path opportunities for non-permanent employees. The discipline and unity delegates have shown is to be commended. It demonstrates their maturity and determination to secure a positive outcome."
