Indian port workers die on log carrier

20 August 2003

Indian authorities are investigating the sudden death of three stevedoring workers and one labour board employee on board the Thai flagged bulk carrier

VISAKHAPATNAM: Four workers died in the early hours of August 15, moments before work was to start on the unloading of timber from the Thai-flagged bulk carrier Tharinee Naree, Fairplay reports.

The vessel's hatch was open at the time of the incident causing port officials to suspect chemicals used for fumigation of the vessel as the prime cause of death.

Authorities have filed a case against the ship's master and have initiated an enquiry by the plant quarantine officer, port health officer and harbour police team.

The 23,724 DWT general cargo carrier, owned by Bangkok based-Precious Capital, had arrived at Vizag port from Labuan, Malaysia.
