Dutch wharfies close ports12 November 2003
Stoppages to affect all Netherlands ports all week, Containerisation International magazine reports All Netherlands seaports will see stoppages protesting the EU Ports Package this week, with protests by transport workers' union FNV Bondgenoten. Two-hour protests, held from 11:30 to 19:30 - allowing day and night shifts to attend - will be held centrally in each port area: Amsterdam Tuesday, the Rotterdam Europoort area Wednesday, the Maasvlakte area Thursday and Flushing and Terneuzen on Friday. Today's protest at Rotterdam's Europoort area will be held nearby the terminal of ro/ro-carrier Cobelfret, a forerunner in self-handling whom FNV leader Niek Stam called 'our biggest enemy'. Monday's protests, in Rotterdam's Waalhaven and Eemhaven area, saw extended stoppages at ECT's home terminal. For Rail Service Centre Rotterdam, the sky has cleared. Following a last-minute agreement on the new collective-pay deal, reached late Monday night, the 24-hour strike was cancelled.
