Bush intervention in dockers dispute 'illegal'12 August 2002
US wharfies retaliate against government attempt to intervene on the side of the bosses THE International Longshore and Warehouse Union says the government move to prevent the union taking industrial action over its contract negotiations is "illegal and inappropriate" . Last week Lloyds List reported that a senior government official that Washington is prepared to block any strike or work slowdown at harbours if contract negotiations fail. "We want President Bush to get the hell out of our negotiations," the union's communications director Steve Stallone told Lloyd's List. Negotiations were scheduled to resume with employer group Pacific Maritime Association on Tuesday. ILWU members have given the union negotiating committee the mandate to call a strike if talks fail, with a second protest rally called for August 12.
