Insurers rattled by latest US asbestos case

28 May 2003

By Barry Robson - Assistant Branch Secretary, Sydney

A Californian jury verdict this month is expected to result in a new wave of asbestos claims

A jury in a civil trial in Los Angeles concluded that a group of London insurance companies and two American insurers must immediately pay nearly $200 million for claims against the bankrupt Fuller-Austin Insulation Company, The New York Times reported on May 8.

The verdict is expected to greatly increase costs for insurance companies, according to the industry experts and plaintiffs' lawyers.
