Global Union ITF negotiations with worlds ship owners highlight safety and crew wages.

At the meeting of the International Bargaining Forum held between 6-7th October in New York City, NY, USA, the representatives of the Joint Negotiating Group and the International Transport Workers' Federation continued to address the issue of piracy which has been an increasing concern for both seafarer and employer groups.
Specifically, a set of recommendations was agreed as guidance to all IBF ship operators and is aimed to assist seafarers, as well as ship owners and managers in any event of piracy.
These, in particular, included recommendations for the protection and welfare of crewmembers who may become captives and also that of their families until, and if necessary, after their release.
With regards to the ongoing pay negotiations, following intense discussions and consultations between the respective IBF parties, an agreement was reached enhancing the previous methodology utilized in negotiating and implementing IBF pay settlements.
It is believed that this should facilitate the pay negotiations which are scheduled to continue in early 2011 with completion expected in March 2011.
In line with the positive developments described above, all existing IBF Agreements have been agreed to be extended to continue until the end of March 2011.
