ITF declares victory in Trico case25 June 2002
Company beats retreat in Gulf War campaign The ITF has claimed victory in the case brought against it by US company Trico. The offshore services provider dropped the entire legal case against the global union federation on the second day of a preliminary hearing for an injunction at theHigh Court in London, even before the ITF had begun its defence. David Cockroft, ITF General Secretary, stated: "I said at the beginning that this court action involved fundamental issues of principle about international solidarity action and freedom of expression, and I am pleased that Trico has seen sense and decided to drop the action." Visibly pleased, David Cockroft continued: "The campaign to ensure that Trico extends the same basic rights to its US employees as it does in other countries will continue. It remains to be seen how Trico continue to conduct themselves in relation to the ongoing campaign. Dialogue is always better than court action." MUA Assistant Secretary Mick Doleman has played a leading role in the campaign to organise exploited workers in the Gulf of Mexico, alongside MUA rank and filers Bluey Roberts and Joe Deakin.
