MUA Lorelay crew donate $63,000The MUA members included 10% of their completion bonus to the fighting fund.21 August 2002By Mick Doleman - Assistant National Secretary
The MUA fighting fund is $44,000 better off today with the crew donating part of their earnings to the union fund Assistant National Secretary Mick Doleman secured a completion bonus for the crew of the Lorelay working on the Bass Strait pipeline recently completed, with the vessel now being redelivered to Indonesia. The delegates contacted the Union and indicated that at a unanimous meeting on board the vessel they wish to donate 10% of the gross of their bonus to the Union's Fighting Fund, equalling $830 per man - totalling over $44,000. This, in addition to other donations during the 7 month operation of the vessel has resulted in total donations to the Union in various forms of around $63,000. This is a generosity out of the pockets of workers, in addition to their Union dues contribution, is a fantastic example and a great contribution to the Union's continual fight for the rights of maritime workers to work in their industries and particularly the shipping industry which is under heavy attack. The available crew arranged for a get together on 21 of this month to make the donation to the Union and also to get together and reminisce the work achieved during the 7 month operation. Mick Doleman said "that the work performed by our members on the Lorelay, in difficult circumstances was greatly appreciated by the company, hence the ability for achieving the bonus, and the donation was an example of great proportions."
