Grupo Mexico Campaign: Napoleón Gómez Acquitted

Published: 4 May 2010

ICEM (International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions) reports the encouraging news that Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, general secretary of the National Miners' and Metalworkers' Union of Mexico, has been acquitted of the baseless charges against him.

Through the Mining and Maritime global unions initiative, the MUA has strongly supported the Mexican unions in their struggle against mining giant Grupo Mexico and Napoleón Gómez who has been forced into exile by threats to his life.

Workers have been on strike in Cananea, Mexico since January 2007 despite attempts by Grupo Mexico and the Mexican Government to break the union.  Other union leaders have been arrested and persecuted and the threat of violence if the government sends in the military continues.
