High noon in Port Pirie
CSL Yarra sails into controversy and industrial furore The CSL Yarra arrived in Port Pirie at midday with a contingent of 18 federal police as well as private security on the wharf alongside CSL, media and maritime union representatives. Engineers, members of the AIMPE, refused to work the gangway, with Assistant National Secretary Rick Newlyn hoisted onto the ship by crane to give MUA crew morale support. There is no sign of the Ukranian replacement crew which is believed to have been flown in to the township ready to board the ship once the Australian flag is lowered. Meanwhile CSL CEO Chris Sorenson has met with maritime union officials in Sydney this morning over mitigating the redundancies. The unions have rejected this saying the union wants to negotiate cost savings and keep the crew on the ship. The unions applied for a further injunction in the courts this afternoon and are still considering appealing the Federal Court action.
