New Sunrise for Timorese Workers

27 February 2007

By MUA media release -

Timor Sea Treaty: MUA calls on government and industry for worker participation and ILO standards in Timor Sea oil and gas industry

The MUA welcomes the Certain Maritime Arrangements in the Timor Sea Treaty, at the same time calling for Timorese/Australian worker participation and adoption of ILO labour standards in all oil and gas projects in the Timor Gap.

"We are calling on the NT Government to establish a forum of the Dili Government, major Timor Sea oil and gas companies, contractors and key oil and gas industry unions in both countries to ensure that labour standards, labour supply, workforce skills and appropriate Timorese and Australian labour participation in the Greater Sunrise and other projects are appropriately addressed," said National Secretary Paddy Crumlin. "The Treaty provides Australia the opportunity to show regional leadership in sound project management that meets the workforce aspirations of both Australia and Timor Leste."

The union is asking the NT Government, which will derive huge economic benefits from the project, and Woodside Energy, the project operator, which has a world class reputation for adopting and adhering to high quality labour relations, to bring Timorese and Australian unions together with management to ensure that all stages of the project are built on internationally recognised labour standards.

"All sides are obligated to act responsibly and positively in responding to some of the big global issues of our time - human rights, decent work, self determination and resource security," said Mr Crumlin.

The union is also urging Greater Sunrise project partners, as well as companies in other Timor Sea projects such as ConocoPhillips, Inpex, Shell, ENI, Santos and Japanese energy utilities Tokyo Electric, Tokyo Gas and Osaka Gas to also adhere to ILO Conventions and assist in Timor Leste nation building.

"Together with the ACTU and other oil and gas industry unions, we want to ensure Sunrise emulates the success of the North West Shelf project," said Mr Crumlin. "This would not have been possible without governments unions and industry working together."
