Ausport Marine robs workers Superannuation

27 March 2006

By Sydney Branch -
This News Item is restricted to the MUA General Industry Division

For over a year now Ausport Marine have failed to make any
sort of consistent payments to the superannuation accounts
of MUA members employed in mooring/unmooring
operations in Sydney.

This shonky employer sat down with the Branch and the delegates before Christmas last year and negotiated an agreement with the MUA. All parties left the discussions thinking we had agreement. A month later when Ausport came to Sydney to sign off on the agreement they refused at the last minute saying they were in need of redundancies in their Sydney operation. Now they want to sack half the workforce. They owe some of our members over $18,000 in Super payments. They have even taken members salary sacrifice payments.

The Sydney Branch has refused to cooperate with Ausport until they meet their full superannuation liability. With WorkChoices now law there is some speculation that Ausport may utilise the laws to drive through their agenda of forced redundancies. This may occur even while they still owe their workforce thousands upon thousands of dollars in super. This injustice is now being made law and it is now time to come out stronger than ever before against employers like Ausport who scrape the bottom of the barrel in terms of morality and decency.

We call on all members and supporters of workers rights to contact the directors of Ausport Marine and register your complaints and opposition to their non-payment of superannuation to the workforce and of their plans to sack their workers in Sydney despite reaching agreement for the current numbers in the EBA negotiations.
