Palmerston crew condemn Govt, over Stolt14 July 2006By MUA crew - Mr Palmerston
The crew of the MT PALMERSTON, members of the Maritime Union of Australia, condemn the Australian Governments lack of support for Australian shipping and the undermining of the vessel Stolt Australia by the use of foreign flagged cheap shipping that is dumping guest labour into the Australian maritime industry at the expense of Australian seafarers.
Your company, like other oil companies, are making a fortune on the back of the high oil price, including exploiting the natural resources from the Australian oil and gas sector. We believe you have an obligation to employ Australian workers as a priority and a corporate obligation to this country. Further to this, the use of flag of convenience vessels whose safety record is appalling globally purely based on the cheap alternative rather than the proven product of Australian shipping whose safety record is second to none further indicates your lack of commitment to the Australian shipping industry. We request an urgent meeting with representatives of your employees, members of the MUA and our Officials as a matter of urgency to discuss your position in relation to this matter. Yours sincerely MUA Crew, MT PALMERSTON ----
