Big Swell for National Surf Comp

12 July 2002

Carmen Lawrence, Slick and John Homer Anderson key talent alongside Australian surfing champs at MUA ITF Whalebone classic longboard titles in Cottesloe, WA, July 13-14

A big swell, big names, big prizes and the annual oily surfer event will all go towards making the national longboard surfing competition in Cottesloe, WA, a must see spectacle this weekend.

Dr Carmen Lawrence MP, Federal Member for Fremantle will present the $5000 in prizes to the winning surfers, the best of the 165 contestants competing in seven divisions.

Officially opening the annual event sponsored by the Maritime Union and the International Transport Workers' Federation is ITF Australia co-ordinator Dean Summers and Slick the oily surfer, alias Al Levy, MUA seafarer and cook from the Australian Pride.

Al will douse himself in slick at 11am as a protest against the Federal Government policy of replacing quality Australian flag vessels with shonky ships of shame on our coastline. The aim is to demonstrate the devastation sub-standard shipping can cause to our marine environment.

Also making a special appearance is Transport Minister John (Homer) Anderson. He'll be answering some sticky questions about the government shipping policy, which is leaving our coastline exposed to disaster.

Surfing champs battling it out for the prize money include Harley Ingelby, last weeks winner of the Hogsbreath longboard legends tour at Port Macquarie, Hayden Swan, NSW Australian over 35 champion and currently 3rd in Australian opens, Brett White, rated in the worlds' top 10 from Noosa, Queensland; Craig Harvey, open champion from Burly Heads, Evans Head Ruben Roxborugh, who just came 3rd in the world championships and local champions Bob Monkman from Yallingup, Jock Bahen, winner of last years Whalebone and Tim Fitzpatrick is current WA junior champion.
