Sydney Branch Condemns Racist Violence12 December 2005By Sydney Branch Executive -
The Sydney Branch of the Maritime Union of Australia utterly condemns the racist violence on the streets and beaches of Sydney over last weekend. The deliberately organised riots are a setback to the efforts made by the majority of Australians to promote a tolerant multi-cultural society. These mindless demonstrations of racist aggression are directly linked to the right-wing agenda of the Howard Government and are attributable to the Howard Government's racist and backward policies, their invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan and their demonisation of Muslim Australians via use of so-called terror laws. Such anti-social behaviour as witnessed over the weekend is no less racist than actions by the KKK in the US, or Apartheid in South Africa or by the policies enacted in Nazi Germany with regard to Jews and other national minorities. In the case of the latter, attacks on Jews soon spread to attacks on Trade Unionists and anyone who stood up against Government sanctioned terror and war. Racism is the tool of the employing class and is used to divide working Australians. The unity of ALL Australian workers is absolutely vital at a time when working people are under severe attack by a Government willing to incite racial hatred and war as a tool to maintain control. The Sydney Branch calls for all people to work together for a truly tolerant multi-cultural society. We stand by those members of the community who have openly condemned the hooliganism and racist mob mentality of the past few days. We call on all levels of Government and community organisations to take a stand and work to eradicate these racist sentiments from our society.
