MAY DAY MAY DAY
ACTU, workers, community and clergy rally around beseiged Yarra crew in Port Pirie PORT PIRIE, SA, Sunday May 5: Hundreds of workers will join the ACTU president, union and community leaders this May Day in support of the embattled crew defending their jobs on board the CSL Yarra. The 17 crew members are now into their fifth day barricaded on board the bulk carrier -- centre of a dispute between the maritime unions and Canadian Steamship Ltd over its plans to replace the Australian crew on the Australian coast with guest workers. Unionists will come from Adelaide, Port Augusta, Whyalla and Wallaroo by bus and car convey to to join an estimated 60 local port workers, women's associations, local politicians, community leaders and clergy for a civic reception by Port Pirie Mayor Ken Madigan at the council chambers adjacent the port at 12pm Sunday, followed by a march led by the ACTU President Sharon Burrow, MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin and Mayor Madigan to 9 Pasminco Wharf where the Yarra is moored. CSL vetoed fresh provisions to the vessel, last week, but local business and the community have ensured the crew have not gone hungry. A lunch time barbeque will be held on the wharves beside the ship at 12.30pm. A resolution from the ship on May 1 voiced the crew's outrage that the Australian Government is promoting the policy of guest workers on the Australian coast: "We fear Australian employers can now sack Australian workers and bring in boatloads of exploited guest labour to take our jobs. This is not just a battle to save our jobs, it's a battle to save the entire Australian merchant fleet," it read.
