International Women's Day highlights equal pay

05 March 2008

By Mich-Elle Myers - MUA Women's Liaison Officer

MUA National officials will join maritime workers from the wharves and ships in the march for pay equity and equality for women this Saturday

Women have come a long way but we still have a way to go. After more than a decade of the Howard Government, women are still suffering from WorkChoices. The pay gap widened under Howard and the attack on workers' rights hit women workers and working families hardest. We've now got to make up a lot of ground. It's important as many MUA comrades turn out on the day in support of women's rights, equal opportunity and pay equity.

An International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) Report on Women and Pay Equity released this week shows that women earn 16 per cent less than men on average."

The global study encompassed 63 nations across all industries.

ACTU President Sharan Burrow said the revealed the extent of discrimination women still faced around the globe:

"In this day and age the gap is appalling. In reality it is probably even wider than the figures suggest because developing countries don't keep national records, nor do hundreds of millions of women working in informal and unprotected jobs appear in any records.

"While education is often touted as the key to closing the gap, the study shows it's educated women who are experiencing the widest pay gap of all with their male counterparts," said Ms Burrow.

The ACTU President says unions are working hard in Australia and in other countries to bridge the pay divide by educating governments, employers and the public. However it is collective bargaining which remains the best means of closing the pay equity gap.

This Women's Day is also highlighting the plight of indigenous women and children and calling for governments to close the gap.

Deputy National Secretary Jim Tannock will lead the MUA delegation on Saturday alongside MUA women liaison officers Sue Virago and Mich-Elle Myers under the MUA and ITF banners.
