Review of shipping policy and regulation14 March 2008By Notice by Parliamentary Committee Secretariat - The House of Representatives Infrastructure and Transport Committee is to conduct a review of coastal shipping policy and regulation.
The inquiry has been requested by the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, with the objective of rebuilding an internationally competitive coastal shipping industry to boost Australia's competitiveness. The Chair of the Committee, Ms Catherine King, says the Committee will inquire into coastal shipping policy and regulation with the aim of enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of Australia's coastal shipping sector. Ms King agrees with the Minister that the sector is of vital importance to the Australian economy. The Committees intends to explore issues such as the policy and regulatory arrangements in place for the coastal shipping sector; strategies for developing an adequate skilled maritime workforce and the effect of coastal shipping policy on the development of an efficient and productive freight transport system.
