French port workers strike against privatisation10 June 2008By MUA news -
Port workers in France renew strike action against privatisation of cargo terminals An estimated 700-800 port workers from Le Havre and Rouen set up traffic 'filters' on major road and bridge access routes to the port of Le Havre, France's leading container port, while the port of Marseilles was brought to a near standstill as workers staged a 24-hour strike, last week Lloyds List reports.. The workers are protesting Government plans to privatise French ports nationally. Meanwhile French seafarers are also threatening strike action in the ro-pax/ferry sector owned by the port's two Corsica line operators, SNCM and CMN. The seafarers say their companies are being excluded from the competition for the creation of a new ro-pax terminal in the eastern docks. Their union, CGT, says the development of sea motorway services to North Africa and ferry services to Corsica threaten existing operators and therefore jobs and working conditions.
