Floating protest against dangerous ship

Semaphore beach under threat

15 March 2008

By MUA media release -

MUA members and community activists will stage a floating community protest at 1:00pm on Saturday 15 March against Destiny Queen, an unregulated foreign ship attempting a dangerous re-fuel off the Semaphore beach, Adelaide - the second such attempt in as many days.

Rick Newlyn, Assistant National Secretary of the MUA said the ship presents huge environmental risks to Adelaide's pristine beaches.

"Yesterday's failed refuel attempt highlights how unpredictable and dangerous these floating fuel transfers can be.

"This ship is loading fuel at sea with no environmental protection plan, no oil spill prevention equipment and no appropriate refuelling facilities," said Mr Newlyn.

The MUA says unsafe and dangerous activities like these have been allowed to occur for years due the Howard Government's failure to regulate substandard foreign vessels in Australian waters.

"The shipping review announced earlier this week by Minister Albanese is an opportunity for the Rudd Government to take the lead and stamp out these sorts of practices once and for all," Mr Newlyn said.

The MUA will also seek to have an International Transport Workers Federation Inspector board the vessel and ensure crew welfare and wages are up to scratch.

"This is a ship that has refused ITF Inspectors access for more than two years.

"We can only assume that the conditions on the vessel have deteriorated and no longer meet ILO convention standards which cover the basics such as food and wages," said Mr Newlyn.

Rick Newlyn will be available for comment at the Semaphore jetty (end Semaphore rd) at 12:30pm before heading out to the floating protest with ITF Inspector Matt Purcell. The boats are expected to reach the Destiny Queen at approx 1:00pm.
