Union campaign forces Coalition capitulation on IR20 February 2008By MUA news -
The complete capitulation of the Coalition on industrial relations in parliament today is for the most part the outcome of the successful union campaign run over the past two years according to MUA national secretary Paddy Crumlin. And MUA members can be proud for the prominent role they have played in firstly protecting their jobs on the wharves and ships and secondly in seeing out the Howard government and the remnants of the conservatives anti-union legislation. Paddy Crumlin was in Canberra today to attend the press club where Transport Minister Lindsay Tanner again recognised the important role Australian coastal shipping plays in the transport chain. "Our members were at the forefront of the struggle against the government IR regime," said Paddy Crumlin. "The Maritime Union was first on their hit list. They sent goons and dogs to drag throw our people out their gates 10 years back and they set out to replace Australian seafarers on our coast, even before they invented WorkChoices. We can be proud of what we achieved today." ACTU Secretary Sharan Burrow said it was only appropriate to mark the great achievements union supporters have made. ?"Who would have thought this time last year we'd see headlines like "The day they brought old WorkChoices down" in the papers? " she asked. "We helped create history on November 24. And the events of this week show our capacity to shape Australia's future is immense."
