MUA Rallies in Support of Blue Diamond15 May 2006By Warren Smith - Assistant Sydney Branch Secretary
A crowd of around 50 MUA and RTBU members gathered outside Scalzo Industries Wetherill Park site today acting in Solidarity with workers at rogue employer Blue Diamond in the United States. Scalzo is a purchaser of Almonds from Blue Diamond who is the world's biggest processors of nuts. After only 10 minutes into the Sydney Rally management from Scalzo Industries approached the demonstrators and produced a letter from the company head addressed to Blue Diamond critical of their anti-union activities, urging them to re-hire sacked workers and to follow the law and avoid a costly and disruptive anti-union campaign. Blue Diamond has been running an aggressive anti-union campaign attempting to thwart the ILWU's organising efforts. Workers have been treated poorly, paid a pittance and sacked for their anti-union behaviour. Blue Diamond has been found guilty of 28 labour law violations in the US. The Branch has received many resolutions of support from the jobs and ships supporting the Blue Diamond workers. MUA members have been very willing and positive to get behind the exploited US workers.
