Vale Bernard Ellis12 July 2007By MUA news -
Barney Ellis a warrior of the working class passed away on Monday the 10 July after a long illness.
Barney was a child of the Great Depression an event that had an influence on his ideas. He was a part of the struggle for a better future for the working people of this country and firmly believed that only a Socialist system would be the answer. Barney went to sea from Newcastle. He served on English and Norwegian ships before returning to Australia and joining the Seamen's Union of Australia, a union he was very proud of. He often spoke about the many struggles that he had participated in and the contribution of the Communist Officials especially E V Elliot who he had great regard for. In his later life Barney served on the tugs in Newcastle and took part in the MUA campaigns . He was very prominent in the battle to stop the Mater Hospital from being privatised and manned the picket line for every day until the end of the dispute. He was a prominent member of the Newcastle Branch of the Maritime Unionists' Socialist Activities Association and the MUA Veterans. His life was dedicated to the cause of the working class and world peace a role model for the youth of today.
