Labor policy commits to strong Aust shipping industry

22 May 2007

By Media Release Tuesday May 22, 2007 -

The Australian Labor Party's clear commitment to a system of cabotage in its party policy would be a bedrock for the Australian shipping industry into the future, the Maritime Union of Australia said today.

Last month's federal ALP conference passed key policy initiatives in its transport, national security and industrial relations platforms, MUA national secretary Paddy Crumlin said today.

Mr Crumlin said that while both the ALP and the MUA recognised the validity of a tightly-managed permit system for ships serving the Australian coast, they also were determined to end the systemic abuse of the system overseen by the Howard Government.

"Australian shipping is at the cross roads. If we want to have a shipping industry into the future, then governments must act now," Mr Crumlin said.

"The starting point of Labor's shipping policy is that a coherent national plan is required if we are to have a secure and environmentally sensitive seafaring regime.

Mr Crumlin said the MUA would continue to draw public attention to the shortfalls in the current system, particularly the substandard wages and conditions being handed out to some crews working the Australian coast on Flag of Convenience ships.

"It is good to see Labor has clearly differentiated itself from the government by commiting to strong and effective system of cabotage.

"We know this position has strong public support with, 74 per cent of voters surveyed in a poll conducted for the MUA, believing that the Australian coast should be served b y Australian seafarers.

The MUA will continue to work with the ALP to ensure that a practical scheme is developed to safeguard the future of the Australian shipping.
