MUA Meets With Triton Owners

01 February 2008

Crisis talks in Sydney as Triton 11 blockade reaches seventh day.

Crisis talks will commence in Sydney this morning between the Maritime Union of Australia and UK company Gardline as 11 sacked Australian seafarers continue their blockade of the RV Triton in Darwin.

The dispute escalated overnight with the crew issued with 'unlawful occupation' notifications.

The Triton is on contract to the Australian Government to conduct border patrol activities in Australia's northern waters but last week its Australian unionised crew was dumped for an inferior, lesser-qualified and possibly foreign crew.

"The Maritime Union of Australia wants to resolve this dispute and get these blokes back to work in secure employment, protecting our Australian borders," said Paddy Crumlin, national secretary of the MUA.

"Unfortunately Gardline have given us little indication that they are willing to negotiate, putting the possibility of a resolution at risk.

"Just last night Gardline served the crew with 'unlawful occupation' letters - a sign that they would rather have the crew removed forcibly than negotiate in good faith.

"The Triton 11 seem resolute and whilst the MUA has no control over the actions of the crew we understand that they are determined to remain onboard until the company comes to its senses.

"The MUA calls on Gardline to stop threatening individual workers and commit to resolving this today.

"Our hope is that the Triton 11 can soon be reunited with their friends and family, without fear of being replaced by a substandard foreign crew that would put Australia's national security at risk."

Negotiations between Gardline and the MUA will commence at the union's national office in Sydney this morning.
