Southern Queensland Branch News 18 December 200718 December 2007By Trevor Munday - Deputy Branch Secretary
Season's Greetings SEASON'S GREETINGS The National Secretary Paddy Crumlin wishes all members, staff and Officers and their families a safe, peaceful and enjoyable Christmas and New Year.
2007 saw momentous changes to the nature of politics in Australia and was an important punctuation for the better in the long political and industrial history of our Union. I look forward to working for you and alongside you to ensure that 2008 continues to consolidate the best interests of maritime workers and their families, and the working class generally. 2008 may bring much work and many demands but we will always have the great satisfaction of fighting from the front in the campaign to rid the Australian workplace and community of the disgraceful political leadership demonstrated by John Howard and his cronies in this country over the last 12 years. The SQ Branch Executive would like to thank members and delegates for their assistance and support throughout 2007 and reiterate the advice of the National Secretary for a pleasant Christmas and prosperous 2008. In closing we would also like to thank our hard working office staff in 2007 for their on-going commitment to our Union and its members. Warm and best wishes and MUA HERE TO STAY! ************************************************************************************************************************************ NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2008 Most members would be aware that the National Conference will be held from 7th - 11th April 2008 in Sydney. Fundamental to National Conference is that it gives Rank and File members the opportunity to develop policy to move our Union forward in a progressive manner. The National Conference resolutions will put into the following headings: 1. Industrial 2. Campaigns 3. Growth 4. Legal/Rules/Financial Members are requested not to put forward resolutions that are Enterprise Agreement matters. The SQ Branch requests our members forward resolutions to the Branch office by 14th January 2008. The Branch Executive and Branch Committee will then meet to refine and consolidate these Agenda Items in a structured manner before they are forwarded to National Office. If members have further enquiries, please contact the Branch. ************************************************************************************************************************************ 2008 UNION DUES There will be an increase in Union dues effective as from 1st January 2008 and will be shown in the first issue of the Branch News 2008, in line with previous years. ************************************************************************************************************************************ NEW ZEALAND DISPUTE The National Secretary Paddy Crumlin reports that after a number of discussions between himself and the General Secretary of the Maritime Union of New Zealand Trevor Hanson, regarding the escalation of the dispute in Napier over the exclusion of MUNZ from new stevedoring activities, that the MUA pledge their full support to our Brothers and Sisters in New Zealand. The MUA decided to send a delegation of support to the picket line. The delegation was led by Victoria Deputy Branch Secretary David Schleibs with a number of seafaring and stevedoring rank and filers from various ports. Southern Queensland Branch delegates are Joe Carr and Paul Petersen. The Australian delegation is among 120 workers protesting and includes delegations from around New Zealand ports. Victoria Deputy Branch Secretary Dave Schleibs said the local people were rapt that the MUA were there and had flags flying. Due to international negotiations led by the Maritime Union and the International Transport Workers' Federation three ships have opted to bypass the port. The Port of Napier has contracted out stevedoring work to a private company employing untrained non-union labour, threatening 25 permanent and 60 casual jobs at Hawkes Bay Stevedoring Services. Comrade Schleibs called on members and branches to urgently send resolutions of support from worksites and monthly meetings to (davidschleibs@mua.org.au) to be read out at the picket line. Protestors have been threatened with trespass notices by Port of Napier and Ontrack, who own land on the Napier waterfront. MUNZ General Secretary Trevor Hanson reported there have been no arrests on the picket and the only dangerous incident occurred when a vehicle carrying non-union workers refused to stop for a police officer on Saturday morning. He highlighted that the port company had been publicly reminded that their actions would directly lead to job losses with local workers right over the Christmas period. Mediation between the Maritime Union and Port Company will carry on next week.
