MUA SQ Branch News 15 March 200715 March 2007By Mick Carr - Branch Secretary
Your Rights @ Work BBQ One Year On YOUR RIGHTS @ WORK B.B.Q. The QTUF Unions have organised a family community B.B.Q. for the electorate of Moreton to mark 12 months since the theft of workers rights on 27th March last year. The B.B.Q. will be on Sunday 25th March to maximise families being able to attend. DATE SUNDAY 25TH MARCH 2007 TIME 11AM TO 2PM PLACE POINCIANA PARK, MOOROOKA
See colour leaflet at your workplace for more information, but most importantly, see you there on Sunday 25th. *********************************************************** HOWARD DESPERATE AS THE POLLS TURN AGAINST HIS GOVERNMENT The mud slinging and personal attacks on Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd by John Howard and his Ministers has back-fired with opinion polls pointing to further gains for the A.L.P. as well as further pessimism towards the Federal Government and its tactics by the broader electorate. The Howard Government itself has come under close scrutiny and is being seen as hypocritical for its allegations against Kevin Rudd whilst almost daily, Government Ministers MP's and John Howard himself are being exposed for the very issues for which they accuse the ALP Opposition. It will be interesting to see the next set of analysis as Howard tries to lie and deceive his way out of what is being reported almost daily. *********************************************************** MUA CAMPAIGN TRAILER JOINS YR@W The Branch's campaign trailer has been re-painted and badged up for the YR@W campaign. This has been done with the assistance and financial support of the TWU and RTBU under the Queensland Transport Unions Federation (QTUF) banner. The trailer will be fitted out with a BBQ and Shade House to be used throughout the marginal seats campaign to educate the community about the loss of worker's rights and conditions under Howard's Work Choices Legislation.
The Branch would like to thank Patrick/Toll delegate Mark Lang for the time and effort he has put into getting the trailer prepared and Political Cartoonist David Pope (scratch) for supplying the art work. Members are encouraged to join this winning campaign and ensure the Howard Government is removed at the next election. *********************************************************** ONE YEAR ON As we approach the first anniversary of John Howard's workplace laws its time for an assessment of their impact on the community. Hear some view from all sides from our expert panel: • Professor David Peetz (IR academic from Griffith University) • Hon. John Mickel (Queensland Industrial Relations Minister) • Grace Grace (General Secretary, Queensland Council of Unions) • Stephen Nance (Manager, Workplace Relations, Commerce Queensland) • Andrew Johnson (Justice and International Mission Advocate, Uniting Church) 6.30pm for 7.00pm Monday 26th March 2007 Wynnum Leagues Club, 92 Wondall Road, Manly West Refreshments provided Tel: QCU for more info - 3846 2468
*********************************************************** ASIC FINALLY GOES AFTER JAMES HARDIE The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) announced on 15th February that it has commenced civil penalty proceedings against James Hardie Industries and others, including Ms Meredith Hellicar, Mr Peter Macdonald and Mr Peter Shafron. A few days later, company directors Meredith Hellicar, Michael Brown and Michael Gillfillan all resigned their well-paid positions on the board. Over many years this company has been responsible for a reckless use of deadly asbestos that has already killed hundreds of workers and still threatens to kill hundreds more. For a long time its directors and owners tried to run away from responsibility. Every twist and turn was tried to slither away from paying any sort of compensation. James Hardie became a symbol of corporate greed. However the company has become such a pariah and so great an embarrassment to the smooth operation of capitalism that ASIC now feels compelled to be seen to be doing something. James Hardie was eventually compelled to reach an agreement that provides some level of acceptable compensation, with a first payment of $184 million on 7th February and much more to come later.
