Leonhardt and Blumberg Sign "Prestige"

13 October 2005

By Dean Summers - ITF Co-ordinator Australia

Following a union boycott by German Dockers in Hamburg yesterday, the high profile German shipping company Leonhardt & Blumberg have decided to sign ITF agreements for both the targeted vessels the "Cap Lobos" and the "NYK Prestige".

ITF Co-ordinator for Germany Mr. Ali Memon, who has been negotiating with the company from Hamburg, commented: "This is a first! L&B's agreement will go a long way to defusing the tension surrounding ships like the controversial NYK Prestige". "We believe the adoption of ITF agreements will be good for both the crew and the company, and hope more of their ships will follow this route."

Australian ITF Co-ordinator Dean Summers joined his international colleagues in celebrating this positive decision and stated that "at last international relations between the ITF in Australia and the high profile German company Leonhardt and Blumberg seem to be improving."

Mr. Summers went on to describe a bitter eight month dispute surrounding L&B refusal to sign an ITF agreement to cover an NYK chartered FOC Prestige. "She has been at the centre of strong union protests at all ports in her trading pattern of Australia, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong and at last we look like reaching agreement.
