Scalzo supports workers16 May 2006By Robert Patchett - Acting Branch Secretary - Victoria
75 members from the MUA, RTBU, TWU braved the wind and the rain on Monday May 15 to show what the strength of people can achieve. Gathering outside Scalzo Industries Melbourne members chanted loudly and called upon importers of the rogue US employer Blue Diamond to think about PEOPLE before PROFIT. Scalzo is a purchaser of almonds from Blue Diamond who is the world's biggest processor of nuts. As the crowd gathered in support of thier ILWU brothers and sisters the Managing Director of Scalzo Industries, Quin Scalzo approached the demonstrators and produced a letter from the company supporting the workers' claims. Quin Scalzo addressed the rally and said that workers are entitled to decent wages and conditions, to have the right to join the union of their choice and have the union bargain on their behalf for their agreements. And to his credit Quin Scalzo aims to address critical issues such as anti-union activities, re-hiring of sacked workers and to follow the law with Blue Diamond Management.
