Drill Rig Workers Deprived of Rights

24 October 2007

By Bernie Farrelly - National Lead Organiser

Workers employed on drill rigs and production platforms in the oil and gas industry on the North West Shelf and off Darwin in the Timor Sea are at a disadvantage to others working in the industry.

Anyone working on FPSO's and support vessels enjoy the right to collectively bargain and have a say in their employment agreements. Rig and platform workers in Bass Strait also enjoy this right.

But if you work on a rig off WA or Darwin you're made to sign an individual contract before you get a job.

NO CHOICE, NO VOICE!!

The ACTU 'YOUR RIGHTS @ WORK' campaign has been developed around the rights of workers to collectively bargain for their wages and conditions at work.

Workers in the offshore oil and gas industry, as members of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and the Australian Workers Union (AWU), have a long and proud history of collective bargaining to improve wage rates and conditions to the level they're enjoyed today.

Through their union membership, workers have developed the capacity to be represented at all levels of the industry.

Indeed employers, through their industry associations, have long been successful in having their say at both industry and Govt level. Why shouldn't workers have the same ability?

Through the MUA-AWU Offshore Alliance members are represented at industry level through regular dialogue with the peak industry body and employer groups such as the Australian Mines and Metals Association (AMMA), and the National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority ( NOPSA) which deals with OH&S.

At Govt level, both the MUA and AWU have been instrumental in industry policy development such as the protection of workers rights in the formulation of Maritime Security Legislation.

And members are well represented on the international stage through the position held by MUA Assistant National Secretary Mick Doleman as Vice-Chair on the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) Offshore Taskforce Group which brings together all ITF affiliate unions in the industry from around the world including the AWU.

The taskforce deals with international agreements, develops support networks, targets bad employers and campaigns on all aspects of OH&S. The AWU are also a member on the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions (ICEM).

To ensure workers in all sectors of the industry have a say, it's important union membership continues to grow!
