MUA idol Mark 2

WEB DELEGATES, WEBCAM, MUA IDOL MARK II & THE UPCOMING NEW MUA WEBSITE

Do you work in the maritime industry and also work in television, theatre or film?

Have you done so in the past?

Do you dream of doing so in the future?

Back in the fifties a bunch of theatre and film workers got jobs under the hook on the Sydney waterfront. They started making films by wharfies about wharfies for wharfies -- and the union. Political works. Working class films. The union then commissioned them to produce work and, before long, the WWF film unit was set up. These films are still used by filmmakers and television today.

Two years ago the union decided to set up a new film unit. Members were invited to make short films and those short listed were judged by industry experts and the union to become our MUA film unit. The prizewinners were Viron Papadopoulos, Cooper Smith and John Teague. Both Viron and Cooper have been making films ever since.

This year we are looking for film and web delegates from all ports and ships to make short film clips, the best of which will be shown on our website and the MUA YouTube site.

The winners will then become website delegates who will be trained to post regular film clips on the website from the branch rooms and/or with branch approval. The best of these will be highlighted on the opening webpages.

The winners will be announced at National Delegates' Conference opening at the National Maritime Museum on Tuesday April 8, 2008. Your films will be shown to an audience of around 300 national and international delegates and you will be included in upcoming union international delegations.

You Tube/web delegates who show promise will also be trained to join Viron, Cooper and others in the MUA film unit and learn to make documentaries and broadcast quality films.

Here's how you enter:

• get your entry form from the union rooms or our website and start filming. Even a mobile phone can do the job. Make a short film (maximum 2 minutes) about your rights at work, the federal election campaign or your workplace.

• Get your branch endorsement in writing

* Mark your entry "MUA Idol II" and post, email or deliver it to National Office in Sydney by November 14, 2007

Every entry short-listed will be posted on the website and YouTube. You will also receive a copy of Fighting Films: A History of the WWF Film Unit and a collection of the films on DVD or VHS. So even if you've only ever made home movies or enjoyed taking still photographs, give it a go.
