Congress condemns FoC shipping

ACTU Congress unanimously adopted a transport policy condemning the deregulation of the Australian coastline and calling for restrictions of flag of convenience shipping in the domestic market at its four-day meeting held in Melbourne in August.

ACTU Congress unanimously adopted a transport policy condemning the deregulation of the Australian coastline and calling for restrictions of flag of convenience shipping in the domestic market at its four-day meeting held in Melbourne in August.

In speaking to the resolution MUA National Secretary and ACTU executive member Paddy Crumlin sought to draw all unions in the transport sector together against outsourcing, fatigue, poor safety and privatisation at the same time campaigning for public transport and more women. He also outlined the importance of our High Court victory over CSL.

"It's about the right of Australian transport workers to work in their own country," said Crumlin.

Delegates also endorsed MUA policies against foreign crews taking wharfies' work and self-handling their own cargoes.

Special tributes were also made to departed union leaders Tas Bull and Joe McGinness (Aboriginal Australian, land rights and union activist).
