Intense & Frustrating

By Maritime Union of Australia

I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the union

and rank and file members for allowing me to take part in the

historic Patrick EBA negotiations.

Negotiations lasted five weeks with much time exhausted on rostering arrangements. Talks were intense and frustrating at times but we managed to move the company a long way from their original draft. In the end I believe the result was a desirable outcome, with an in principle agreement being struck between the parties.

I would like to say that the discipline displayed by such a large contingent of negotiators was of a high standard and this frustrated the company reps who continually sledged and made remarks to intimidate us.

The level of skill displayed by our participating officials; Paddy Crumlin, Mick O'Leary, Jim Tannock, branch officials and rank and file members was of the highest standard. This I believe resulted in the outcome achieved. Nearly all of the log of claims from the Patrick rank and file conference were achieved.

I have been involved in a number of negotiations over the years but never one as large or as disciplined as this one.
