Maritime Day
By Maritime Union of Australia
This year the ITF is co-ordinating World Maritime Day globally.
Branches are asked to organise activities to take place on Tuesday
afternoon, September 25, to allow maximum attendance at the morning's
stop work meetings.
The theme is globalisation - the cost to seafarers, a response
to the IMO report Globalisation - The Role of Seafarers.
The aims circulated by the ITF are to:
- abolish the FOC system
- promote quality shipping
- eliminate sub-standard shipping and sub-standard flag states
- re-establish a sustainable and rational shipping industry
- invite shipowners to join the ITF in establishing a bipartite
forum to discuss the ICONS Report and to propose and promote suitable
remedial measures
- develop a shipping industry able to attract suitably qualified
new entrants, thus maintaining the necessary maritime expertise
and avoiding shortages of qualified personnel.
Branches should think creatively using other industry players
to effectively highlight our struggle.
ITF material will be circulated to branches shortly.
Shipping Campaign Co-ordinator Sean Chaffer asks for input from
branches to ensure this day is a success.
Meanwhile National Secretary Paddy Crumlin has been attending
the Australian Maritime Network which brings together representatives
of the Australian shipping industry and is chaired by Peter Morris.
It is designed to give the industry a strong voice in Canberra
and has had a number of well attended seminars in Queensland,
WA and Victoria in the past year.
Peter Morris will address the at the Maritime Day ceremony beside
the anchor at the Maritime Museum again this year. And in Melbourne
the Victorian Branch is planning to hold a similar function at
the Polly Woodside.
