Offshore Confab
By Maritime Union of Australia
THE Union will be holding an offshore delegates' conference at
the branch rooms in Fremantle, October 1-5.
Assistant National Secretary Mick Doleman reports delegations
from Australian Offshore Services, Tidewater, Total Marine and
Pacific Manning, will comprise four integrated ratings and one
cook or caterer - with both casual and permanent employees eligible
for nomination.
Delegates will also be drawn from both WA and the Eastern States
so that there would be a 50/50 split in representation, in addition
to a representative from each of the monthly meetings (one from
Fremantle, one from Brisbane, one from Victoria, one from Sydney
and one from Adelaide).
The main agenda item is the development of the Offshore Enterprise
Agreement for 2002. But delegates will also be brought up to date
with the ACTU unions@work strategy
"We have also invited the ITF to send a delegation, hopefully
from the United States and the North Sea," said Doleman. "This
would give us an opportunity to analyse and discuss international
events in the offshore oil and gas industry that may soon impact
on workers here."
Agenda items and nominations should be forwarded to the National
Office no later than August 3. Where needed, ballots will be held
at the enterprise.
Conference outcomes will go to National Council, before being
distributed to all offshore vessels.
"This conference gives us an opportunity to develop a pro-active
agenda for the Union in the offshore oil and gas industry," said
Doleman. "It also gives us a real opportunity to give our delegates
additional skills."
Again, donations are required to assist in the running of the
conference which will include the East West airfares.
